What is a typical hydrotherapy session like?

During the initial assessment, the hydrotherapist will discuss with the owner the condition of the dog, the intended effects and concepts of hydrotherapy, and how this will help the dog.  A plan or programme will be agreed to help track progress. The owner will be familiarised with the hydrotherapy centre, and briefed on procedures and health and safety.

At the start of every session, the hydrotherapist will ask the owner how their dog is, when it last had a meal and whether it has been to the toilet. The hydrotherapist will then conduct a health check on the dog and, if all is well, it will be given a warm shower in preparation for the pool or treadmill.  On leaving the pool or treadmill, the hydrotherapist will shower the dog to wash away chemicals, and dry it using an air dryer or a towel.

How to prepare your dog for its hydrotherapy session

  1. Prior to the Initial Assessment, your veterinarian (vet) needs to give consent by completing a Referral Form. We will provide the form and talk you through it. The referral form is also available in our ‘Booking Terms & Conditions, using the button below.

  2. Please ensure your dog has its meal at least three hours before its hydrotherapy session.

  3. Please bring the dog’s own towel and drying coat.

  4. Before entering the hydrotherapy centre, please take your dog for its toilet (poo and wee).
